Using Tana with Claude - The future of note-taking?

I recently sat down with my co-founder Paco to talk about his latest experiment: hooking up Claude AI directly to Tana using MCP, along with a custom SQLite database he built himself.
What he showed me was genuinely mind-blowing.
The Setup
Paco has been using Claude to interact with Tana through natural language. Instead of manually filling out fields and managing supertags, he simply talks to Claude — and Claude handles the rest.
The magic happens because Claude understands his entire PKM structure. When he mentions a concept like "ICOR," Claude automatically links it to the existing node. When he creates a journal entry, Claude fills in all the required fields that used to take manual effort. The system even detects inconsistencies across his 400+ supertags and suggests how to fix them.
Why External AI Beats Built-In AI
One insight that stood out: there's a massive difference between using AI inside a tool versus using Claude to interact with that tool from the outside.
Even though Tana offers Claude as an option internally, the results are completely different when you use Claude directly through MCP. Claude makes connections between concepts, identifies structural problems in your supertag hierarchy, and handles complex refactoring — things that just don't happen the same way with embedded AI.
The Missing Link
What Paco described is essentially a triangle: natural language, context, and AI working together. The moment you have a well-structured PKM system behind Claude, you can leverage AI with almost no limitations.
He even built a "coach me" command that pulls from all his personal context — goals, projects, habits — and gives him insights based on how he sees the world. All through natural conversation.
The Bottom Line
This integration makes Tana dramatically easier to use. You can describe your situation in plain language and ask Claude to create the supertag structure, define the fields, and set up the relationships. The object-oriented complexity that made Tana intimidating? It fades away when you have an AI assistant that truly understands both the tool and your personal system.
